چکیده

Note here that this subtrigging strategy does not work for all types of FCIs. Chierchia (2005) points out that, in Italian, subtrigging rescues the universal type of FCI qualsiasi, but not the existential counterpart uno qualsiasi. The same contrast holds for other Romance languages like Spanish: adding a relative clause improves the universal FCI cualquier in (4), but not the existential FCI un N cualquiera in (5).

The Meaning of Free Choice

In this paper, I discuss the distribution and interpretation of free choice items (FCIs) in Greek, a language exhibiting a lexical paradigm of such items distinct from that of negative polarity items. Greek differs in this respect from English which uniformly employs any. FCIs are grammatical only in certain contexts that can be characterized as nonveridical (Giannakidou 1998, 1999), and althou...

Free Choice Items and Alternatives

Extending the proposal made by Schulz (2003), we put forward a pragmatic account of the meaning of existential and universal FC items, where the ‘ignorance or indifference’ inference triggered by the former and the ‘universal’ inference triggered by the latter are treated as implicatures obtained by standard gricean reasoning formalized in terms of the two operations grice and competence. On th...

Cognitive dissonance resolution depends on episodic memory

The notion that past choices affect preferences is one of the most influential concepts of social psychology since its first report in the 50 s, and its theorization within the cognitive dissonance framework. In the free-choice paradigm (FCP) after choosing between two similarly rated items, subjects reevaluate chosen items as more attractive and rejected items as less attractive. However the r...

How to donkey FC- and NPI-any∗

Free Choice any and Negative Polarity Item any are uniformly analyzed as counterfactual donkey sentences (in disguise). Their difference in meaning will be reduced to the distinction between strong and weak readings of donkey sentences. It is shown that this explains the universal and existential character of FCand NPI-any, respectively, and the positive and negative contexts in which they are ...

Cognitive Dissonance Resolution Is Related to Episodic Memory

The notion that our past choices affect our future behavior is certainly one of the most influential concepts of social psychology since its first experimental report in the 50 s, and its initial theorization by Festinger within the "cognitive dissonance" framework. Using the free choice paradigm (FCP), it was shown that choosing between two similarly rated items made subjects reevaluate the ch...
